In 1947, following a series of fires, the residents of Griswold recognized the need for additional fire protection beyond what was available in the borough of Jewett City. Motivated by a strong sense of community and safety, a group of dedicated individuals came together to establish a second fire company to serve the town.
On November 5, 1947, the Griswold Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) was officially founded by Frank Wayland Stetson Sr., Andrew Bonchuck, Charles Campbell, Raymond Campbell, Donald Roode Sr., Joseph Zatorski, George Norman, John Osga Sr., William Whitehead, and Russell Barber. These visionaries laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of public safety in Griswold.
The department’s first major acquisition was a 1948 GMC cab and chassis, purchased for $1,647. Demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and resourcefulness, the founding members custom-fabricated a fire-utility body and mounted a pump on the vehicle, creating GVFD’s very first fire engine. Designated as Engine J-21, this vehicle was stationed at the original firehouse, which is now the Pachaug Town Hall, located adjacent to the current GVFD firehouse.
Engine J-21 faithfully served the department and the community for over three decades before being retired in 1980. Even in retirement, this historic engine continues to contribute to the town, now serving as a work truck on Norman’s farm in Griswold.
The story of the Griswold Volunteer Fire Department’s founding is one of determination, teamwork, and innovation. It stands as a testament to the commitment of those early members who worked tirelessly to protect and serve their community, laying the groundwork for the department’s continued legacy.
